Vulnerability in eventlet (CVE-2021-21419)

Summary

Vulnerability in eventlet (CVE-2021-21419). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Mitigation: upgrade to 0.31.0 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Impact

A websocket peer may exhaust memory on Eventlet side by sending very large websocket frames. Malicious peer may exhaust memory on Eventlet side by sending highly compressed data frame.

Patches

Version 0.31.0 restricts websocket frame to reasonable limits.

Workarounds

Restricting memory usage via OS limits would help against overall machine exhaustion. No workaround to protect Eventlet process.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'eventlet' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'eventlet' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Apply temporary workaround mitigate
Restricting memory usage via OS limits would help against overall machine exhaustion.

Restricting memory usage via OS limits would help against overall machine exhaustion.

  3. 3
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade eventlet to 0.31.0

  4. 4
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production
