CVE-2022-49372

Vulnerability in Kernel (CVE-2022-49372)

Summary

Vulnerability in Kernel (CVE-2022-49372). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Mitigation: upgrade to 4.9.318, 4.14.283, 4.19.247, 5.4.198, 5.10.122, 5.15.47, 5.17.15, 5.18.4 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

tcp: tcp_rtx_synack() can be called from process context

Laurent reported the enclosed report [1]

This bug triggers with following coditions:

  1. Kernel built with CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT=y

  2. A new passive FastOpen TCP socket is created.
This FO socket waits for an ACK coming from client to be a complete
    ESTABLISHED one.

  3. A socket operation on this socket goes through lock_sock()
    release_sock() dance.

  4. While the socket is owned by the user in step 2),
a retransmit of the SYN is received and stored in socket backlog.

  5. At release_sock() time, the socket backlog is processed while
    in process context.

  6. A SYNACK packet is cooked in response of the SYN retransmit.

  7. -> tcp_rtx_synack() is called in process context.

Before blamed commit, tcp_rtx_synack() was always called from BH handler,
from a timer handler.

Fix this by using TCP_INC_STATS() & NET_INC_STATS()
which do not assume caller is in non preemptible context.

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (unclassified) exists in Kernel.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of Kernel.

🔥 Severity

Severity: ?. Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

🔧 How to fix

Update to 4.9.318, 4.14.283, 4.19.247, 5.4.198, 5.10.122, 5.15.47, 5.17.15, 5.18.4.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'Kernel' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'Kernel' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で Kernel を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade Kernel to 4.9.318, 4.14.283, 4.19.247, 5.4.198, 5.10.122, 5.15.47, 5.17.15, 5.18.4

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
