CVE-2024-58090

Vulnerability in Kernel (CVE-2024-58090)

Summary

Vulnerability in Kernel (CVE-2024-58090). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Mitigation: upgrade to 5.4.291, 5.10.235, 5.15.179, 6.1.130, 6.6.81, 6.12.18, 6.13.6 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

sched/core: Prevent rescheduling when interrupts are disabled

David reported a warning observed while loop testing kexec jump:

Interrupts enabled after irqrouter_resume+0x0/0x50
WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 560 at drivers/base/syscore.c:103 syscore_resume+0x18a/0x220
kernel_kexec+0xf6/0x180
__do_sys_reboot+0x206/0x250
do_syscall_64+0x95/0x180

The corresponding interrupt flag trace:

hardirqs last enabled at (15573): [] __up_console_sem+0x7e/0x90
hardirqs last disabled at (15580): [] __up_console_sem+0x63/0x90

That means __up_console_sem() was invoked with interrupts enabled. Further
instrumentation revealed that in the interrupt disabled section of kexec
jump one of the syscore_suspend() callbacks woke up a task, which set the
NEED_RESCHED flag. A later callback in the resume path invoked
cond_resched() which in turn led to the invocation of the scheduler:

__cond_resched+0x21/0x60
down_timeout+0x18/0x60
acpi_os_wait_semaphore+0x4c/0x80
acpi_ut_acquire_mutex+0x3d/0x100

kernel_kexec+0x145/0x1c0
__do_sys_reboot+0xeb/0x240

This is a long standing problem, which probably got more visible with
the recent printk changes. Something does a task wakeup and the
scheduler sets t…

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (unclassified) exists in Kernel.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of Kernel.

🔥 Severity

Severity: ?. Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

🔧 How to fix

Update to 5.4.291, 5.10.235, 5.15.179, 6.1.130, 6.6.81, 6.12.18, 6.13.6.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'Kernel' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'Kernel' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で Kernel を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade Kernel to 5.4.291, 5.10.235, 5.15.179, 6.1.130, 6.6.81, 6.12.18, 6.13.6

    ステージング環境で 5.4.291, 5.10.235, 5.15.179, 6.1.130, 6.6.81, 6.12.18, 6.13.6 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
