Path Traversal in bit7z (CVE-2026-45380)

Summary

Path traversal in bit7z (CVE-2026-45380). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

bit7z is a cross-platform C++ static library that allows the compression/extraction of archive files. Prior to version 4.0.12, a one-byte off-by-one error in SafeOutPathBuilder::restoreSymlink() allows an attacker to craft a .7z archive that, when extracted with bit7z on any non-Windows platform, creates a symlink escaping the intended output directory. Subsequent archive entries extracted through this symlink write arbitrary files outside the extraction directory with the permissions of the extracting process. This issue has been patched in version 4.0.12.

❓ What is the problem

Path traversal (CWE-22) exists in bit7z.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of bit7z.

🔥 Severity

Severity: Low (CVSS 3.6/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'bit7z' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'bit7z' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で bit7z を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
