CVE-2026-47714 medium CVSS 6.1

Vulnerability in libheif (CVE-2026-47714)

Summary

Vulnerability in libheif (CVE-2026-47714). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via width.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

libheif is a HEIF and AVIF file format decoder and encoder. In versions 1.21.2 and prior, the inline mask parsing code in libheif/region.cc contains an integer overflow. Both width and height are unsigned int (32-bit) values parsed from the HEIF file. Their product can exceed UINT32_MAX, wrapping to a small value before the division by 8. This causes an undersized buffer allocation, leading to out-of-bounds memory access when the mask data is later interpreted as a width x height bitmap. Version 1.22.0 patches the issue.

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (CWE-190) exists in libheif. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via width without authentication.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of libheif. Attack surface: width / height / UINT32_MAX.

🔥 Severity

Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.1/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'libheif' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'libheif' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で libheif を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
