CVE-2026-68969 medium CVSS 6.5

Vulnerability in apache-airflow (CVE-2026-68969)

Summary

Vulnerability in apache-airflow (CVE-2026-68969). Confidential information can be exposed externally. Exploitable via PATCH /api/v2/variables. Mitigation: upgrade to 3.3.1 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Apache Airflow wrote Variable values and Connection extra contents to the audit log in cleartext when they were submitted through the bulk endpoints (PATCH /api/v2/variables and PATCH /api/v2/connections). The audit-log masking recognised only top-level request fields, and a bulk request nests its entities two levels below, so no masking was applied to them. Any authenticated user with audit-log read access -- who need not hold Variables or Connections read at all -- could recover those secrets verbatim, and the Connection extra copy is stored unencrypted in the log while the connection table encrypts it. The Airflow UI's Import Variables action posts to this endpoint, so an ordinary operator import wrote every secret in the file to the log. This is a different code path from CVE-2026-50204: that fix shipped in 3.3.0 and covers the single-entity endpoints only, so deployments that upgraded in response to that advisory remain affected and must upgrade again. Users are advised to upgrade to apache-airflow 3.3.1 or later.

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (CWE-532) exists in apache-airflow. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via PATCH /api/v2/variables.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of apache-airflow. Attack surface: PATCH /api/v2/variables / PATCH /api/v2/connections / extra.

🔥 Severity

Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.5/10). Confidential information can be exposed externally.

🔧 How to fix

Update to 3.3.1.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual PATCH /api/v2/variables requests with malformed payloads or SQL meta-characters. Run grep -r 'apache-airflow' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'apache-airflow' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で apache-airflow を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
Hunt for indicators of compromise detect
    grep 'PATCH /api/v2/variables' /var/log/nginx/access.log | grep -E '(unusual_payload|sqli_pattern)'

    アクセスログで PATCH /api/v2/variables への異常なリクエスト (不正な認証ヘッダ・SQLメタ文字)を過去 30〜90日分捜索。WAF/SIEM があれば該当パスのアラート発火履歴を確認。

  3. 3
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade apache-airflow to 3.3.1

    ステージング環境で 3.3.1 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスと、Step 2 で見つけた異常検知の続報チェックを含めること。

  4. 4
    Post-deployment verification verify
Replay attack against PATCH /api/v2/variables on staging to confirm patch closes the vector

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番では Step 2 と同じログクエリでアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
