Severity

Severity: ?. Data can be tampered with by attackers.

How to fix

Update to 9.2.0357-r0.

Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'vim' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposureidentify
    grep -r 'vim' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Apply patchpatch
    Upgrade vim to 9.2.0357-r0

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verificationverify
Confirm patched version is live in production

Original description The description as published by the source.

Vim is an open source, command line text editor. Prior to 9.2.0357, A command injection vulnerability exists in Vim's tag file processing. When resolving a tag, the filename field from the tags file is passed through wildcard expansion to resolve environment variables and wildcards. If the filename field contains backtick syntax (e.g., command), Vim executes the embedded command via the system shell with the full privileges of the running user.
