Summary

Vulnerability in crossbeam (CVE-2018-20996). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via ManuallyDrop. Mitigation: upgrade to 0.4.1 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Even if an element is popped from a queue, crossbeam would run its
destructor inside the epoch-based garbage collector. This is a source
of double frees.

The flaw was corrected by wrapping elements inside queues in a
ManuallyDrop.

Thanks to @c0gent for reporting the issue.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'crossbeam' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade crossbeam to 0.4.1

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production
