Vulnerability in Sudo (CVE-2019-14287)

Summary

Vulnerability in Sudo (CVE-2019-14287). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

In Sudo before 1.8.28, an attacker with access to a Runas ALL sudoer account can bypass certain policy blacklists and session PAM modules, and can cause incorrect logging, by invoking sudo with a crafted user ID. For example, this allows bypass of !root configuration, and USER= logging, for a "sudo -u #$((0xffffffff))" command.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'Sudo' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production
