Vulnerability in Oracle Openssl (CVE-2019-1551)
Summary
Vulnerability in Oracle Openssl (CVE-2019-1551). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
There is an overflow bug in the x64_64 Montgomery squaring procedure used in exponentiation with 512-bit moduli. No EC algorithms are affected. Analysis suggests that attacks against 2-prime RSA1024, 3-prime RSA1536, and DSA1024 as a result of this defect would be very difficult to perform and are not believed likely. Attacks against DH512 are considered just feasible. However, for an attack the target would have to re-use the DH512 private key, which is not recommended anyway. Also applications directly using the low level API BN_mod_exp may be affected if they use BN_FLG_CONSTTIME. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1e (Affected 1.1.1-1.1.1d). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2u (Affected 1.0.2-1.0.2t).

CVE-2019-1551 (Oracle Openssl) — CWE-190 / CVSS v3 5.3
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Affected: 1.1.1 - 1.1.1d
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-190) exists in Oracle Openssl.
Affected versions of Oracle Openssl: 1.1.1 - 1.1.1d.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.3/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory. (If a vulnerable version 1.1.1 - 1.1.1d is in production, plan an immediate maintenance window.)
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'Openssl' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'Openssl' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
Opensslを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Match against affected range verify
Confirm if version satisfies `1.1.1 - 1.1.1d`Step 1 で見つかったバージョンが影響範囲
1.1.1 - 1.1.1dに該当するか照合。本番で稼働中ならインシデント扱い。 -
3Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
