Summary
Vulnerability reported (CVE-2021-29541). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via tf.raw_ops.StringNGrams.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Impact
An attacker can trigger a dereference of a null pointer in tf.raw_ops.StringNGrams:
import tensorflow as tf
data=tf.constant([''] * 11, shape=[11], dtype=tf.string)
splits = [0]*115
splits.append(3)
data_splits=tf.constant(splits, shape=[116], dtype=tf.int64)
tf.raw_ops.StringNGrams(data=data, data_splits=data_splits, separator=b'Ss',
ngram_widths=[7,6,11],
left_pad='ABCDE', right_pad=b'ZYXWVU',
pad_width=50, preserve_short_sequences=True)
This is because the implementation does not fully validate the data_splits argument. This would result in ngrams_data to be a null pointer when the output would be computed to have 0 or negative size.
Later writes to the output tensor would then cause a null pointer dereference.
Patches
We have patched the issue in GitHub commit ba424dd8f16f7110eea526a8086f1a155f14f22b.
The fix will be included in TensorFlow 2.5.0. We will also cherrypick this commit on TensorFlow 2.4.2, TensorFlow 2.3.3, TensorFlow 2.2.3 and TensorFlow 2.1.4, as these are also affected…

CVE-2021-29541
Attack vector: local / no user interaction
Attack surface: tf.raw_ops.StringNGrams / data_splits / ngrams_data
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (unclassified) has been reported. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via tf.raw_ops.StringNGrams.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions. Attack surface: tf.raw_ops.StringNGrams / data_splits / ngrams_data.
Severity: ?. Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Audit SBOM/dependencies to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
Audit SBOM/dependencies for affected components.資産台帳・SBOM・依存マニフェストで影響コンポーネントを特定する。
-
2Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
