Summary

Vulnerability reported (CVE-2021-32765). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via RESP.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Hiredis is a minimalistic C client library for the Redis database. In affected versions Hiredis is vulnurable to integer overflow if provided maliciously crafted or corrupted RESP mult-bulk protocol data. When parsing multi-bulk (array-like) replies, hiredis fails to check if count * sizeof(redisReply*) can be represented in SIZE_MAX. If it can not, and the calloc() call doesn't itself make this check, it would result in a short allocation and subsequent buffer overflow. Users of hiredis who are unable to update may set the maxelements context option to a value small enough that no overflow is possible.

CVE-2021-32765
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / no user interaction
Attack surface: RESP / SIZE_MAX
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (unclassified) has been reported. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via RESP.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions. Attack surface: RESP / SIZE_MAX.

🔥 Severity

Severity: ?. Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Audit SBOM/dependencies to find affected services.
