Vulnerability in tensorflow (CVE-2022-23593)
Summary
Vulnerability in tensorflow (CVE-2022-23593). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via simplifyBroadcast. Mitigation: upgrade to 2.8.0 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Impact
The simplifyBroadcast function in the MLIR-TFRT infrastructure in TensorFlow is vulnerable to a segfault (hence, denial of service), if called with scalar shapes.
size_t maxRank = 0;
for (auto shape : llvm::enumerate(shapes)) {
auto found_shape = analysis.dimensionsForShapeTensor(shape.value());
if (!found_shape) return {};
shapes_found.push_back(*found_shape);
maxRank = std::max(maxRank, found_shape->size());
}
SmallVector
joined_dimensions(maxRank);
If all shapes are scalar, then maxRank is 0, so we build an empty SmallVector.
Patches
We have patched the issue in GitHub commit 35f0fabb4c178253a964d7aabdbb15c6a398b69a.
The fix will be included in TensorFlow 2.8.0. This is the only affected version.

CVE-2022-23593 (tensorflow) — CWE-754
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Attack surface: simplifyBroadcast / maxRank / SmallVector
Patched: 2.8.0 — apply immediately
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-754) exists in tensorflow. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via simplifyBroadcast without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of tensorflow. Attack surface: simplifyBroadcast / maxRank / SmallVector.
Severity: ?. Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to 2.8.0.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'tensorflow' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'tensorflow' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
tensorflowを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Apply patch patch
Upgrade tensorflow to 2.8.0ステージング環境で 2.8.0 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。
-
3Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
