Vulnerability in Envoyproxy (CVE-2023-35945)
Summary
Vulnerability in Envoyproxy (CVE-2023-35945). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via RST_STREAM.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Envoy is a cloud-native high-performance edge/middle/service proxy. Envoy’s HTTP/2 codec may leak a header map and bookkeeping structures upon receiving RST_STREAM immediately followed by the GOAWAY frames from an upstream server. In nghttp2, cleanup of pending requests due to receipt of the GOAWAY frame skips de-allocation of the bookkeeping structure and pending compressed header. The error return [code path] is taken if connection is already marked for not sending more requests due to GOAWAY frame. The clean-up code is right after the return statement, causing memory leak. Denial of service through memory exhaustion. This vulnerability was patched in versions(s) 1.26.3, 1.25.8, 1.24.9, 1.23.11.

CVE-2023-35945 (Envoyproxy) — CWE-400 / CVSS v3 7.5
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Attack surface: RST_STREAM / GOAWAY
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-400) exists in Envoyproxy. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via RST_STREAM without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of Envoyproxy. Attack surface: RST_STREAM / GOAWAY.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.5/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'Envoyproxy' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
