Vulnerability in tokio-boring (CVE-2023-6180)

Summary

Vulnerability in tokio-boring (CVE-2023-6180). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via set_ex_data. Mitigation: upgrade to 4.1.0 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Impact

The tokio-boring library in version 4.0.0 is affected by a memory leak issue that can lead to excessive resource consumption and potential DoS by resource exhaustion. The set_ex_data function used by the library did not deallocate memory used by pre-existing data in memory each time after completing a TLS connection causing the program to consume more resources with each new connection.

Patches

The issue is fixed in version 4.1.0 of tokio-boring.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'tokio-boring' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade tokio-boring to 4.1.0

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production
