CVE-2024-56539

Vulnerability in Kernel (CVE-2024-56539)

Summary

Vulnerability in Kernel (CVE-2024-56539). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Mitigation: upgrade to 4.19.325, 5.4.287, 5.10.231, 5.15.174, 6.1.120, 6.6.64, 6.11.11, 6.12.2 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

wifi: mwifiex: Fix memcpy() field-spanning write warning in mwifiex_config_scan()

Replace one-element array with a flexible-array member in struct mwifiex_ie_types_wildcard_ssid_params to fix the following warning
on a MT8173 Chromebook (mt8173-elm-hana):

[ 356.775250] ------------[ cut here ]------------
[ 356.784543] memcpy: detected field-spanning write (size 6) of single field "wildcard_ssid_tlv->ssid" at drivers/net/wireless/marvell/mwifiex/scan.c:904 (size 1)
[ 356.813403] WARNING: CPU: 3 PID: 742 at drivers/net/wireless/marvell/mwifiex/scan.c:904 mwifiex_scan_networks+0x4fc/0xf28 [mwifiex]

The "(size 6)" above is exactly the length of the SSID of the network
this device was connected to. The source of the warning looks like:

ssid_len = user_scan_in->ssid_list[i].ssid_len;
[...]
memcpy(wildcard_ssid_tlv->ssid,
       user_scan_in->ssid_list[i].ssid, ssid_len);

There is a #define WILDCARD_SSID_TLV_MAX_SIZE that uses sizeof() on this
struct, but it already didn't account for the size of the one-element
array, so it doesn't need to be changed.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of Kernel.

🔥 Severity

Severity: ?. Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

🔧 How to fix

Update to 4.19.325, 5.4.287, 5.10.231, 5.15.174, 6.1.120, 6.6.64, 6.11.11, 6.12.2.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'Kernel' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'Kernel' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で Kernel を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade Kernel to 4.19.325, 5.4.287, 5.10.231, 5.15.174, 6.1.120, 6.6.64, 6.11.11, 6.12.2

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
    Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
