Out-of-Bounds Read in MP4v2 (CVE-2024-58397)

Summary

Vulnerability in MP4v2 (CVE-2024-58397). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

MP4v2 through 2.1.3 contains a heap-based out-of-bounds read in MP4File::GetChapters() that allows attackers to read past heap allocations via crafted QuickTime chapter samples. Attackers can supply an MP4 file whose chapter sample is shorter than its declared title length, crashing applications like mp4chaps or leaking adjacent heap memory into chapter titles.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'MP4v2' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production
