CVE-2025-29049

Vulnerability in mathlive (CVE-2025-29049)

Summary

Vulnerability in mathlive (CVE-2025-29049). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via test. Mitigation: upgrade to 0.104.0 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Summary

Despite normal text rendering as LaTeX expressions, preventing XSS, the library also provides users with commands which may modify HTML, such as the \htmlData command, and the lack of escaping leads to XSS.

Details

Overall in the code, other than in the test folder, no functions escaping HTML can be seen.

PoC

  1. Go to https://cortexjs.io/mathlive/demo/
  2. Paste either \htmlData{>}{} in the LaTeX textarea.

Impact

MathLive users who render untrusted mathematical expressions could encounter malicious input using \htmlData that runs arbitrary JavaScript, or generate invalid HTML.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'mathlive' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade mathlive to 0.104.0

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production
