Vulnerability in openexr (CVE-2025-64182)
Summary
Vulnerability in openexr (CVE-2025-64182). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via int. Mitigation: upgrade to 3.4.3 or later.

Summary
A memory safety bug in the legacy OpenEXR Python adapter (the deprecated OpenEXR.InputFile wrapper) allow crashes and likely code execution when opening attacker-controlled EXR files or when passing crafted Python objects.
Integer overflow and unchecked allocation in InputFile.channel() and InputFile.channels() can lead to heap overflow (32 bit) or a NULL deref (64 bit).
This bug was found with ZeroPath.
Details
Integer overflow and unchecked allocation in InputFile.channel() and InputFile.channels() can lead to heap overflow (32 bit) or a NULL deref (64 bit), around here.

In
channel():-
Width and height are derived from the header dataWindow using
int. -
typeSizeis asize_t. The buffer size is computed astypeSize * width * heightwith no bounds checks. -
The result is passed to
PyString_FromStringAndSize(NULL, size)which maps toPyBytes_FromStringAndSize. That function expectsPy_ssize_t. If the product overflows or exceedsPY_SSIZE_T_MAX, allocation fails or the value wraps. -
The return value is not checked. The code immediately calls
PyString_AsString(r)and proceeds to build aFrameBufferand callsreadPixels(miny, maxy). -
On 64 bit:
PyBytes_FromStringAndSizereturns NULL, the wrapper der…

CVE-2025-64182 (openexr) — CWE-120
Attack vector: local / unauthenticated
Attack surface: int / typeSize / size_t / PyBytes_FromStringAndSize
Patched: 3.4.3 — apply immediately
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-120) exists in openexr. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via int without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of openexr. Attack surface: int / typeSize / size_t / PyBytes_FromStringAndSize.
Severity: ?. Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.
Update to 3.4.3.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'openexr' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'openexr' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
openexrを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Apply patch patch
Upgrade openexr to 3.4.3ステージング環境で 3.4.3 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。
-
3Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
