CVE-2025-68619 high CVSS 7.2

Code Injection in Signal K Server (CVE-2025-68619)

Summary

Code injection in Signal K Server (CVE-2025-68619). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via postinstall.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Signal K Server is a server application that runs on a central hub in a boat. Versions prior to 2.19.0 of the appstore interface allow administrators to install npm packages through a REST API endpoint. While the endpoint validates that the package name exists in the npm registry as a known plugin or webapp, the version parameter accepts arbitrary npm version specifiers including URLs. npm supports installing packages from git repositories, GitHub shorthand syntax, and HTTP/HTTPS URLs pointing to tarballs. When npm installs a package, it can automatically execute any postinstall script defined in package.json, enabling arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability exists because npm's version specifier syntax is extremely flexible, and the SignalK code passes the version parameter directly to npm without sanitization. An attacker with admin access can install a package from an attacker-controlled source containing a malicious postinstall script. Version 2.19.0 contains a patch for the issue.

CVE-2025-68619 (Signal K Server) — CWE-94 / CVSS v3 7.2
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / no user interaction
Attack surface: postinstall
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.

❓ What is the problem

Arbitrary code execution (CWE-94) exists in Signal K Server. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via postinstall.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of Signal K Server. Attack surface: postinstall.

🔥 Severity

Severity: High (CVSS 7.2/10). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Audit SBOM/dependencies to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    Audit SBOM/dependencies for affected components.

    資産台帳・SBOM・依存マニフェストで Signal K Server を使っているサービスとバージョンを洗い出す。

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
