CVE-2025-71380 high CVSS 8.8

Vulnerability in n8n-nodes-base (CVE-2025-71380)

Summary

Vulnerability in n8n-nodes-base (CVE-2025-71380). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Impact

The Execute Command node in n8n allows execution of arbitrary commands on the host system where n8n runs. While this functionality is intended for advanced automation and can be useful in certain workflows, it poses a security risk if all users with access to the n8n instance are not fully trusted.

An attacker—either a malicious user or someone who has compromised a legitimate user account—could exploit this node to run arbitrary commands on the host machine, potentially leading to data exfiltration, service disruption, or full system compromise.

This vulnerability affects all n8n deployments where:

  • The Execute Command node is enabled, and
  • Not all user accounts are strictly controlled and trusted.

n8n.cloud is not impacted.

Patches

No code changes have been made to alter the behavior of the Execute Command node. The recommended mitigation is to disable the node by default in environments where it is not explicitly required.

Future n8n versions may change the default availability of this node.

Workarounds

Administrators can disable the Execute Command node by setting the following environment variable before starting n8n:

export NODES_EXCLUDE: "[\"n8n-nodes-base.executeCommand\"]"

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (CWE-284) exists in n8n-nodes-base.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of n8n-nodes-base.

🔥 Severity

Severity: High (CVSS 8.8/10). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'n8n-nodes-base' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'n8n-nodes-base' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で n8n-nodes-base を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
