Out-of-Bounds Read in CFITSIO (CVE-2026-111125)

Summary

Vulnerability in CFITSIO (CVE-2026-111125). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

CFITSIO through 4.7.0 contains a heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the HCOMPRESS tile decoder that allows attackers to read past the compressed tile buffer via input_nnybble in fits_hdecompress.c. Attackers can supply a crafted FITS file with ZCMPTYPE HCOMPRESS_1 declaring oversized tile geometry to crash applications calling fits_read_pix or disclose limited heap memory.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'CFITSIO' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production
