Out-of-Bounds Write in FreeRDP (CVE-2026-26955)
Summary
Out-of-bounds write in FreeRDP (CVE-2026-26955). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via xfreerdp.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. Prior to version 3.23.0, a malicious RDP server can trigger a heap buffer overflow in FreeRDP clients using the GDI surface pipeline (e.g., xfreerdp) by sending an RDPGFX ClearCodec surface command with an out-of-bounds destination rectangle. The gdi_SurfaceCommand_ClearCodec() handler does not call is_within_surface() to validate the command rectangle against the destination surface dimensions, allowing attacker-controlled cmd->left/cmd->top (and subcodec rectangle offsets) to reach image copy routines that write into surface->data without bounds enforcement. The OOB write corrupts an adjacent gdiGfxSurface struct's codecs* pointer with attacker-controlled pixel data, and corruption of codecs* is sufficient to reach an indirect function pointer call (NSC_CONTEXT.decode at nsc.c:500) on a subsequent codec command — full instruction pointer (RIP) control demonstrated in exploitability harness. Users should upgrade to version 3.23.0 to receive a patch.

A vulnerability tracked as CVE-2026-26955 has been found in FreeRDP.
Attackers can target a specific entry point like xfreerdp over the network to misuse the product.
Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. CVSS score: 8.8/10.
What to do: apply the vendor's official patched release.
If unsure, ask your IT team or search "FreeRDP CVE-2026-26955" on the vendor's site.
CVE-2026-26955 (FreeRDP) — CWE-787 / CVSS v3 8.8
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated
Attack surface: xfreerdp / gdiGfxSurface / NSC_CONTEXT.decode
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
Out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) exists in FreeRDP. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via xfreerdp without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of FreeRDP. Attack surface: xfreerdp / gdiGfxSurface / NSC_CONTEXT.decode.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.8/10). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'FreeRDP' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'FreeRDP' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
FreeRDPを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
