Vulnerability in Kernel (CVE-2026-3184)
Summary
Vulnerability in Kernel (CVE-2026-3184). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via PAM_RHOST.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
A flaw was found in util-linux. Improper hostname canonicalization in the login(1) utility, when invoked with the -h option, can modify the supplied remote hostname before setting PAM_RHOST. A remote attacker could exploit this by providing a specially crafted hostname, potentially bypassing host-based Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) access control rules that rely on fully qualified domain names. This could lead to unauthorized access.

CVE-2026-3184 (Kernel) — CWE-289 / CVSS v3 3.7
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Attack surface: PAM_RHOST
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-289) exists in Kernel. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via PAM_RHOST without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of Kernel. Attack surface: PAM_RHOST.
Severity: Low (CVSS 3.7/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'Kernel' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
