Vulnerability in gnutls (CVE-2026-3833)
Summary
Vulnerability in gnutls (CVE-2026-3833). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via nameConstraints.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
A flaw was found in gnutls. This vulnerability occurs because gnutls performs case-sensitive comparisons of nameConstraints labels, specifically for dNSName (DNS) or rfc822Name (email) constraints within excludedSubtrees or permittedSubtrees. A remote attacker can exploit this by crafting a leaf certificate with casing differences in the Subject Alternative Name (SAN), leading to a policy bypass where a certificate that should be rejected is instead accepted. This could result in unauthorized access or information disclosure.

CVE-2026-3833 (gnutls) — CWE-178 / CVSS v3 6.5
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Attack surface: nameConstraints / dNSName / rfc822Name / excludedSubtrees
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-178) exists in gnutls. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via nameConstraints without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of gnutls. Attack surface: nameConstraints / dNSName / rfc822Name / excludedSubtrees.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.5/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'gnutls' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
