Vulnerability in mongoose (CVE-2026-42334)
Summary
Vulnerability in mongoose (CVE-2026-42334). Confidential information can be exposed externally. Exploitable via sanitizeFilter. Mitigation: upgrade to 9.1.6 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Mongoose is a MongoDB object modeling tool designed to work in an asynchronous environment. Prior to 6.13.9, 7.8.9, 8.22.1, and 9.1.6, a vulnerability allows bypassing Mongoose’s sanitizeFilter query sanitization mechanism via the $nor operator. When sanitizeFilter is enabled, Mongoose wraps query operators in $eq to neutralize them. However, prior to the fix, $nor was not included in the set of logical operators that are recursively sanitized. Because $nor accepts an array (like $and and $or), and arrays do not trigger hasDollarKeys(), malicious operators such as $ne, $gt, or $regex could be injected inside a $nor clause without being sanitized. This vulnerability is fixed in 6.13.9, 7.8.9, 8.22.1, and 9.1.6.

CVE-2026-42334 (mongoose) — CWE-74 / CVSS v3 7.5
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Attack surface: sanitizeFilter
Patched: 9.1.6 — apply immediately
Workaround: Delete $nor keys, use an additional schema validation library, or write middleware to strip out $nor from query filters.
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-74) exists in mongoose. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via sanitizeFilter without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of mongoose. Attack surface: sanitizeFilter.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.5/10). Confidential information can be exposed externally.
Update to 9.1.6.
Workaround: Delete $nor keys, use an additional schema validation library, or write middleware to strip out $nor from query filters.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'mongoose' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'mongoose' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
mongooseを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Apply temporary workaround mitigate
Delete `$nor` keys, use an additional schema validation library, or write middleware to strip out `$nor` from query filters.パッチが適用されるまでの応急処置として、Delete
$norkeys, use an additional schema validation library, or write middleware to strip out$norfrom query filters. を実施。回避策の副作用 (機能低下) を確認した上で。 -
3Apply patch patch
Upgrade mongoose to 9.1.6ステージング環境で 9.1.6 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。
