Vulnerability in io.netty:netty-codec-http (CVE-2026-42587)
Summary
Vulnerability in io.netty:netty-codec-http (CVE-2026-42587). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via HttpContentDecompressor. Mitigation: upgrade to 4.1.133.Final or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Netty is an asynchronous, event-driven network application framework. Prior to 4.2.13.Final and 4.1.133.Final, HttpContentDecompressor accepts a maxAllocation parameter to limit decompression buffer size and prevent decompression bomb attacks. This limit is correctly enforced for gzip and deflate encodings via ZlibDecoder, but is silently ignored when the content encoding is br (Brotli), zstd, or snappy. An attacker can bypass the configured decompression limit by sending a compressed payload with Content-Encoding: br instead of Content-Encoding: gzip, causing unbounded memory allocation and out-of-memory denial of service. The same vulnerability exists in DelegatingDecompressorFrameListener for HTTP/2 connections. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.2.13.Final and 4.1.133.Final.

A vulnerability (CWE-400) exists in io.netty:netty-codec-http. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via HttpContentDecompressor without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of io.netty:netty-codec-http. Attack surface: HttpContentDecompressor / maxAllocation / ZlibDecoder / zstd.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.5/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to 4.1.133.Final.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Audit SBOM/dependencies to find affected services.
