Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) in malla (CVE-2026-43980)
Summary
Cross-site scripting in malla (CVE-2026-43980). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Node names (long_name, short_name) received via MQTT are stored in SQLite without sanitization and rendered into the DOM without escaping.
Any participant on a public Meshtastic MQTT broker can set a malicious node name that executes JavaScript in the browser of every Malla dashboard visitor.
Affected files:
- src/malla/templates/traceroute_graph.html (line ~832)
- src/malla/templates/map.html (lines ~945, 1078)
- src/malla/templates/packet_detail.html (lines ~1402, 1452)
- src/malla/static/js/relay_node_analysis.js (line ~124)
Steps to reproduce
- Publish a Meshtastic NODEINFO_APP packet to any public MQTT broker with long_name set to a HTML entity i.e ``
- Wait for malla-capture to store it
- Open the dashboard
Impact
Allows unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the browser, such as:
- Phishing overlays
- Force redirect to malicious websites
- Injection of arbitrary third-party scripts (no CSP restrictions)
- Browser resource abuse
- Persistent dashboard denial of service

CVE-2026-43980 (malla) — CWE-79 / CVSS v3 6.3
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of malla.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.3/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'malla' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'malla' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
mallaを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
