Vulnerability in protobufjs (CVE-2026-45740)
Summary
Vulnerability in protobufjs (CVE-2026-45740). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via nested. Mitigation: upgrade to 8.2.0 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
protobufjs compiles protobuf definitions into JavaScript (JS) functions. Prior to 7.5.8 and 8.2.0, protobufjs could recurse without a depth limit while expanding nested JSON descriptors through Root.fromJSON() and Namespace.addJSON(). A crafted JSON descriptor with deeply nested namespace definitions could cause the JavaScript call stack to be exhausted during descriptor loading. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.5.8 and 8.2.0.

Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'protobufjs' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
2Apply temporary workaround mitigate
Avoid loading untrusted protobuf JSON descriptors with affected versions.
-
3Apply patch patch
-
4Post-deployment verification verify
