Vulnerability in python-statemachine (CVE-2026-47103)
Summary
Vulnerability in python-statemachine (CVE-2026-47103). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via SCXMLProcessor. Mitigation: upgrade to 3.2.0 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Summary
python-statemachine 3.1.2 evaluates `` attributes in SCXML documents using Python's eval(). Any application that passes attacker-controlled SCXML content to SCXMLProcessor is vulnerable to arbitrary code execution in the context of the hosting process.
Details
SCXMLProcessor.parse_scxml_file() processes SCXML documents and evaluates `` element expr attributes via the following call chain:
SCXMLProcessor.parse_scxml_file()
SCXMLProcessor.process_definition()
create_datamodel_action_callable()
_create_dataitem_callable()
_eval()
eval()
_eval() calls Python's built-in eval() directly on the expression string without sandboxing or restriction.
PoC
1. Install:
pip install python-statemachine==3.1.2
2. Create an SCXML file containing:
3. Run:
SCXMLProcessor.parse_scxml_file(DATA_EXPR_CHART)
SCXMLProcessor.start()
4. During start(), reaches _eval(), which calls eval().
5. Result:
data_marker_before_start: False
data_marker_after_start: True
success: True
Impact
This is an eval injection vulnerability (CWE-95). Remote or local code execution depending on whether the consuming application accepts SCXML content from remote users, uploaded files, configuration, plugins, or other untrusted sources.

CVE-2026-47103 (python-statemachine) — CWE-95 / CVSS v3 9.8
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Attack surface: SCXMLProcessor / expr
Patched: 3.2.0 — apply immediately
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-95) exists in python-statemachine. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via SCXMLProcessor without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of python-statemachine. Attack surface: SCXMLProcessor / expr.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.8/10). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.
Update to 3.2.0.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'python-statemachine' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'python-statemachine' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
python-statemachineを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Apply patch patch
Upgrade python-statemachine to 3.2.0ステージング環境で 3.2.0 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。
-
3Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
