CVE-2026-48062 critical CVSS 9.8

Unrestricted File Upload in codeigniter4/framework (CVE-2026-48062)

Summary

Vulnerability in codeigniter4/framework (CVE-2026-48062). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via ext_in. Mitigation: upgrade to 4.7.3 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

CodeIgniter is a PHP full-stack web framework. Prior to 4.7.3, the ext_in upload validation rule in system/Validation/StrictRules/FileRules.php checked the MIME-derived guessed extension instead of the client-provided filename extension. As a result, an uploaded file named shell.php containing GIF-like content could pass validation such as uploaded[avatar]|is_image[avatar]|mime_in[avatar,image/gif]|ext_in[avatar,gif] because the detected MIME type maps to gif, even though the uploaded filename extension is php. Applications are impacted if they accept user-controlled uploads, rely on ext_in to validate the uploaded filename extension, save uploaded files using the original client filename with $file->move($path), store uploads in a web-accessible directory, and allow PHP or other executable files to run from that directory. In those conditions, this may lead to arbitrary code execution. This issue is fixed in version 4.7.3.

🔧 How to fix

Update to 4.7.3.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'codeigniter4/framework' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'codeigniter4/framework' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で codeigniter4/framework を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade codeigniter4/framework to 4.7.3

    ステージング環境で 4.7.3 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
