OS Command Injection in Notepad (CVE-2026-48800)
Summary
OS command injection in Notepad (CVE-2026-48800). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Mitigation: upgrade to 8.9.6.1 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Notepad++ is a free and open-source source code editor. Prior to 8.9.6.1, the tag text content inside in shortcuts.xml is read by NppXml::value(aNode) (Parameters.cpp:3658) in the feedUserCmds() function and stored in UserCommand._cmd without any validation. When the user clicks the corresponding entry in the Run menu, NppCommands.cpp:4264 creates a Command object with string2wstring(ucmd.getCmd()) and calls run(), which invokes ShellExecute (RunDlg.cpp:221) with the attacker-controlled string as the executable path. The injected command appears as a normal menu item in the Run menu, making it a viable persistence mechanism. This vulnerability is fixed in 8.9.6.1.

-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'Notepad' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
Notepadを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Apply patch patch
Upgrade Notepad to 8.9.6.1ステージング環境で 8.9.6.1 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。
-
3Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
