CVE-2026-53811 high CVSS 8.8

Vulnerability in openclaw (CVE-2026-53811)

Summary

Vulnerability in openclaw (CVE-2026-53811). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Mitigation: upgrade to 2026.5.7 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Summary

Matrix allowFrom could bind to mutable display names. In affected versions, a Matrix account able to change display name metadata could match a policy entry through mutable display metadata.

This advisory is scoped to the named feature and configuration. It does not change OpenClaw's trusted-operator model: authenticated Gateway operators, installed plugins, and intentional local execution surfaces remain trusted unless a separate policy, approval, allowlist, sandbox, or auth boundary is crossed.

Impact

When the affected feature is enabled and reachable, this could receive agent access intended for another Matrix identity. Practical impact depends on the operator's configuration and whether lower-trust input can reach that path.

Patched Versions

The first stable patched version is 2026.5.7.

Mitigations

use stable Matrix user IDs in allowlists until patched. As general hardening, keep channel and tool allowlists narrow, avoid sharing one Gateway between mutually untrusted users, and disable the affected feature when it is not needed.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'openclaw' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で openclaw を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade openclaw to 2026.5.7

    ステージング環境で 2026.5.7 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
