Vulnerability in LibreChat (CVE-2026-54027)

Summary

Vulnerability in LibreChat (CVE-2026-54027). Data can be tampered with by attackers. Exploitable via POST /api/files/images. Mitigation: upgrade to 0.8.4-rc1 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

LibreChat is an enhanced ChatGPT clone that supports multiple AI providers. Prior to 0.8.4-rc1, the POST /api/files/images endpoint allows any authenticated user to upload files into any agent's tool_resources (e.g., context, execute_code) without verifying ownership or EDIT permission on the target agent. A permission check was added to the POST /api/files route in a previous patch, but the image upload route was never updated with the same check. An attacker can simply use the image endpoint instead of the file endpoint to bypass the authorization entirely. This vulnerability is fixed in 0.8.4-rc1.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual POST /api/files/images requests with malformed payloads or SQL meta-characters. Run grep -r 'LibreChat' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'LibreChat' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
Hunt for indicators of compromise detect
    grep 'POST /api/files/images' /var/log/nginx/access.log | grep -E '(unusual_payload|sqli_pattern)'

  3. 3
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade LibreChat to 0.8.4-rc1

  4. 4
    Post-deployment verification verify
Replay attack against POST /api/files/images on staging to confirm patch closes the vector
