Out-of-Bounds Write in RTKLIB (CVE-2026-56786)

Summary

Out-of-bounds write in RTKLIB (CVE-2026-56786). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

RTKLIB through 2.4.3 contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in decode_type1033 function that fails to clamp length counters to destination buffer size, allowing up to 191-byte overflow into fixed 64-byte descriptor fields. An attacker controlling an NTRIP or serial RTCM3 correction stream can craft a valid CRC-bearing type-1033 message to corrupt adjacent rtcm_t object members, potentially achieving arbitrary code execution or denial of service.

❓ What is the problem

Out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) exists in RTKLIB.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of RTKLIB.

🔥 Severity

Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.8/10). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'RTKLIB' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'RTKLIB' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で RTKLIB を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
