Path Traversal in OPNsense (CVE-2026-58393)
Summary
Path traversal in OPNsense (CVE-2026-58393). Data can be tampered with by attackers.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
OPNsense is a FreeBSD based firewall and routing platform. Prior to version 26.1.11, the OpenVPN Client Specific Override common_name field accepts path traversal sequences and openvpn_csc_conf_write() concatenates the value into /var/etc/openvpn-csc// without normalization or a basename check. The affected event handlers are client_connect.php and user_pass_verify.php. An authenticated user with Client Specific Override privileges can store the traversal value, and a matching OpenVPN client-connect or authentication event causes a generated CSO file to be written outside the intended directory. The file content is generated OpenVPN configuration rather than arbitrary bytes, and practical exploitation requires the attacker to cause a matching common name or username to be processed. This issue is fixed in version 26.1.11.

CVE-2026-58393 (OPNsense) — CWE-22 / CVSS v3 5.9
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / no user interaction
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
Path traversal (CWE-22) exists in OPNsense.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of OPNsense.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.9/10). Data can be tampered with by attackers.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'OPNsense' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'OPNsense' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
OPNsenseを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
