Vulnerability Details

File: go/vt/vttablet/tabletmanager/vreplication/vrlog.go

Summary

vttablet's /debug/vrlog HTTP endpoint streams live VReplication event data — including the literal SQL DML statements being replicated by MoveTables, Reshard, Materialize, and "vitess"-strategy Online DDL workflows — with no authorization check at all. Every comparable "debugging" HTTP endpoint in vttablet/vtgate (querylogz, queryz, txlogz, livequeryz, schemaz, debugenv, hotrows, tablet_plans, query_stats, query_rules) calls acl.CheckAccessHTTP(r, acl.DEBUGGING) before serving data, so that the cluster operator's configured --security-policy (e.g. deny-all, read-only, or a custom plugin) is actually honored. vrlog.go is the one exception: it has zero references to the acl package.

Root Cause

addHttpEndpoint() registers /debug/vrlog via servenv.HTTPHandleFunc, and vrlogStatsHandler() immediately starts streaming subscribed VrLogStats events to the response writer without first calling acl.CheckAccessHTTP(r, acl.DEBUGGING), unlike every sibling handler in the same family (see e.g. go/vt/vttablet/tabletserver/querylogz.go's querylogzHandler, which calls the check first).

The data streamed is sensitive: go/vt/vttablet/tabletmanager/vreplication/vplayer.go calls NewVrLogStats(...).Send(sql) / .Send(event.Statement) for every row change and statement event flowing through a VReplication stream (vplayer.go:339, 700, 771, 785) — i.e. the li…

CVE-2026-65959 (vitess.io/vitess) — CWE-862 / CVSS v3 5.3
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Attack surface: GET /debug/vrlog / vttablet / vrlog.go / acl
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (CWE-862) exists in vitess.io/vitess. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via GET /debug/vrlog without authentication.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of vitess.io/vitess. Attack surface: GET /debug/vrlog / vttablet / vrlog.go / acl.

🔥 Severity

Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.3/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual GET /debug/vrlog requests with malformed payloads or SQL meta-characters. Run grep -r 'vitess.io/vitess' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'vitess.io/vitess' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で vitess.io/vitess を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
Hunt for indicators of compromise detect
    grep 'GET /debug/vrlog' /var/log/nginx/access.log | grep -E '(unusual_payload|sqli_pattern)'

    アクセスログで GET /debug/vrlog への異常なリクエスト (不正な認証ヘッダ・SQLメタ文字)を過去 30〜90日分捜索。WAF/SIEM があれば該当パスのアラート発火履歴を確認。

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Replay attack against GET /debug/vrlog on staging to confirm patch closes the vector

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番では Step 2 と同じログクエリでアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
