Authorization Flaw in open-webui (CVE-2026-70490)

Summary

Vulnerability in open-webui (CVE-2026-70490). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via get_verified_user. Mitigation: upgrade to 0.11.0 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

Summary

The terminal WebSocket route authenticates its own first-message JWT instead of going through the HTTP dependency chain, and never applies the role check that get_verified_user enforces on every HTTP terminal route. An account whose role is pending, meaning registered but not approved, or approved and later deactivated back to pending, can therefore open an interactive terminal session that the HTTP terminal endpoints would refuse. The missing control is the verified-user role gate, not the terminal access grants, which are evaluated correctly.

Preconditions

At least one terminal server must be configured, which is off by default, and its access grants must cover the account: either public read (principal_id: "*") or a group the account still belongs to. The attacker needs a valid, unexpired JWT for a pending account and the terminal server id. Both are obtainable by an account that registered while approvals are pending, or by one that held access and was deactivated, since deactivation sets the role to pending without revoking the token, which lasts four weeks by default. Deployments with no terminal server configured, or whose terminal grants are admin-only, are not affected.

Impact

A deployment loses the account-approval boundary for terminal access. An unapproved or deactivated account gets interactive shell access, file browsing and terminal-backed tooling in the terminal environment, for as long as its token remains valid. Because the HTT…

CVE-2026-70490 (open-webui) — CWE-863 / CVSS v3 6.3
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / no user interaction
Attack surface: get_verified_user / pending / get_verified_user_by_token / _resolve_authenticated_connection
Patched: 0.11.0 — apply immediately
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.

❓ What is the problem

Incorrect authorization (CWE-863) exists in open-webui. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via get_verified_user.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of open-webui. Attack surface: get_verified_user / pending / get_verified_user_by_token / _resolve_authenticated_connection.

🔥 Severity

Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.3/10). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

🔧 How to fix

Update to 0.11.0.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'open-webui' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'open-webui' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で open-webui を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade open-webui to 0.11.0

    ステージング環境で 0.11.0 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
