Code Injection in electron (CVE-2026-70609)
Summary
Code injection in electron (CVE-2026-70609). Confidential information can be exposed externally. Exploitable via mode. Mitigation: upgrade to 42.0.0-beta.1 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Impact
The mode option of webContents.openDevTools() was not sanitized before use by the DevTools frontend. If an attacker can influence this value, script under their control may run in the DevTools context, which in unsandboxed configurations has access to Node.js.
Apps are only affected if untrusted input can reach the mode argument of openDevTools(), or if untrusted content can call openDevTools() on a `` it embeds. Apps that only ever pass a fixed dock mode are not affected.
Workarounds
Only pass fixed, allowlisted values (right, bottom, undocked, detach) as the DevTools mode, and do not expose openDevTools to untrusted content.
Fixed Versions
42.0.0-beta.141.2.040.9.039.8.7

CVE-2026-70609 (electron) — CWE-94 / CVSS v3 5.7
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable)
Attack surface: mode / right / bottom / undocked
Patched: 42.0.0-beta.1 — apply immediately
Workaround: Only pass fixed, allowlisted values (right, bottom, undocked, detach) as the DevTools mode, and do not expose openDevTools to untrusted content.
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
Arbitrary code execution (CWE-94) exists in electron. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via mode.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of electron. Attack surface: mode / right / bottom / undocked.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.7/10). Confidential information can be exposed externally.
Update to 42.0.0-beta.1.
Workaround: Only pass fixed, allowlisted values (right, bottom, undocked, detach) as the DevTools mode, and do not expose openDevTools to untrusted content.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'electron' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'electron' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
2Apply temporary workaround mitigate
Only pass fixed, allowlisted values (`right`, `bottom`, `undocked`, `detach`) as the DevTools `mode`, and do not expose `openDevTools` to untrusted content. Only pass fixed, allowlisted values (
right, bottom, undocked, detach) as the DevToolsmode, and do not exposeopenDevToolsto untrusted content. -
3Apply patch patch
-
4Post-deployment verification verify
