`openvt -u` is intended to identify the owner of the current VT and then execute `login` as that...
Summary
Vulnerability reported (CVE-2026-72693). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via login.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
openvt -u is intended to identify the owner of the current VT and then execute login as that user from a privileged context. In the documented kbrequest/init usage, the ownership test in authenticate_user() relies on stat("/proc//fd/0"). stat() on /proc//fd/0 follows the symlink to the underlying TTY device node. As a result, buf.st_uid reflects the owner of the TTY node rather than the owner of the process holding the file descriptor. If the TTY owner returns to root or the getty owner after logout while an unprivileged process still has fd 0 attached to that TTY, the check can incorrectly treat that process as belonging to the privileged console owner. Once that check succeeds, the -u path executes a passwordless login as the selected user. In the documented kbrequest/init deployment using openvt -us, this can result in passwordless login -f root on the spawned VT. This report establishes that privilege escalation path for that documented deployment; it does not claim equivalent reachability for deployments that do not use openvt -u from a privileged kbrequest/init path.

CVE-2026-72693 — CWE-284 / CVSS v3 7.8
Attack vector: local / no user interaction
Attack surface: login / kbrequest / buf.st_uid / root
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-284) has been reported. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via login.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions. Attack surface: login / kbrequest / buf.st_uid / root.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.8/10). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Audit SBOM/dependencies to find affected services.
