CVE-2026-89669 critical CVSS 9.8

Vulnerability in Linux kernel (CVE-2026-89669)

Summary

Vulnerability in Linux kernel (CVE-2026-89669). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nfsd: initialize copy-notify stateid before publishing it

nfsd4_copy_notify() finished initializing the cpntf state after
nfs4_alloc_init_cpntf_state() had already linked it into the
s2s_cp_stateids IDR and the parent's sc_cp_list, with cs_count == 1 (the
membership reference) and none held for the caller. A racing
OFFLOAD_CANCEL (crafted cl_id == nn->s2s_cp_cl_id plus the guessable
so_id) could reach manage_cpntf_state() and free the entry, turning the
caller's subsequent cpn_cnr_stateid read and cp_p_stateid/cp_p_clid
writes into use-after-free. The owning clientid was also only recorded
after publication, so it could not gate an ownership check in that window.

Record cp_p_stateid and cp_p_clid inside nfs4_alloc_init_cpntf_state()
before nfs4_init_cp_state() publishes the entry, and return it with an
extra reference. The caller reads the stateid under that reference and
drops it with nfs4_put_cpntf_state(); on a late error the laundromat
reaps the entry.

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (unclassified) exists in Linux kernel.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of Linux kernel.

🔥 Severity

Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.8/10). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Audit SBOM/dependencies to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    Audit SBOM/dependencies for affected components.

    資産台帳・SBOM・依存マニフェストで Linux kernel を使っているサービスとバージョンを洗い出す。

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
    Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
