Use-After-Free in HDF5 (CVE-2026-92627)
Summary
Vulnerability in HDF5 (CVE-2026-92627). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
A heap-use-after-free vulnerability exists in H5T__conv_f_f() in src/H5Tconv.c in HDF5 before 1.14.2. When converting a compound datatype containing floating-point members during a dataset read, a temporary buffer allocated with calloc() is freed and subsequently read from within the same conversion routine. An attacker who can supply a crafted HDF5 file containing a specially constructed compound datatype can trigger the use-after-free when the file is parsed by an application that reads the affected dataset, such as h5dump. This can result in a crash and, depending on heap layout and allocator behavior, may be exploitable for further memory corruption up to remote code execution.

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of HDF5.
Severity: ?. Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.
Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'HDF5' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'HDF5' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
HDF5を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
