Vulnerability in vm2 (CVE-2026-93605)
Summary
Vulnerability in vm2 (CVE-2026-93605). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Exploitable via NodeVM. Mitigation: upgrade to 3.12.1 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
vm2 NodeVM versions before 3.12.1 contain a sandbox escape vulnerability where the DANGEROUS_BUILTINS denylist omits child_process despite blocking other host-spawning modules. Attackers can require child_process and execute arbitrary commands on the host system when NodeVM is configured with builtin:['*'] or explicit child_process allowance.
This fork hardens NodeVM with a DANGEROUS_BUILTINS denylist that blocks host‑code‑reaching core modules even when the sandbox requests builtin:['*'] or names them explicitly — the list contains module, worker_threads, cluster, vm, repl, inspector, process, trace_events, wasi, diagnostics_channel, async_hooks, perf_hooks, v8, os, dns, and test. It omits child_process — the single most direct command‑execution primitive. As a result, a sandbox running under require:{builtin:['*']} (or the fork's own documented ['*','-http','-net',…] subtract pattern) can require('child_process').execSync(...) and execute arbitrary commands on the host. The omission is internally inconsistent: cluster is denied with the explicit rationale "cluster.fork() spawns a host child process running attacker‑controlled code," yet child_process — which spawns host processes more directly — is not.

CVE-2026-93605 (vm2) — CWE-693 / CVSS v3 10.0
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Attack surface: NodeVM / DANGEROUS_BUILTINS / module / worker_threads
Patched: 3.12.1 — apply immediately
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.
A vulnerability (CWE-693) exists in vm2. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via NodeVM without authentication.
Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of vm2. Attack surface: NodeVM / DANGEROUS_BUILTINS / module / worker_threads.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 10.0/10). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.
Update to 3.12.1.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'vm2' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'vm2' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
vm2を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Apply patch patch
Upgrade vm2 to 3.12.1ステージング環境で 3.12.1 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。
-
3Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
