CVE-2026-98240

Vulnerability in Linux kernel (CVE-2026-98240)

Summary

Vulnerability in Linux kernel (CVE-2026-98240). Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure. Exploitable via options_len.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: ip_tunnel: initialize options_len before referencing options

The following command triggers a kernel panic:

ip link add d0 type dummy; ip link set d0 up
ip route add 10.30.0.0/16
encap ip id 300 geneve_opts 4660:66:11223344 dev d0

memcpy: detected buffer overflow: 4 byte write of buffer size 0
kernel BUG at lib/string_helpers.c:1044!
...
ip_tun_parse_opts.part.0.cold+0x10/0x10
ip_tun_build_state+0x116/0x2a0

On kernels built with GCC 15+ and CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE, the fortified
memcpy() got 0 sized destination with request of 4 bytes length:

static int ip_tun_parse_opts_geneve(...)
{
...
attr = tb[LWTUNNEL_IP_OPT_GENEVE_DATA];
data_len = nla_len(attr); /* == 4 */

  struct geneve_opt *opt = ip_tunnel_info_opts(info) + opts_len;
  memcpy(opt->opt_data, nla_data(attr), data_len);
  /*     ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 0 since options_len is assigned afterwards */

Fixed by initializing the counter before the options are referenced.
Matching what tunnel_key_opts_set() already does.

CVE-2026-98240 (Linux kernel)
Attack surface: options_len / CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (unclassified) exists in Linux kernel. Attackers reach the vulnerable code path via options_len.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of Linux kernel. Attack surface: options_len / CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE.

🔥 Severity

Severity: ?. Risk of unauthorized operations or information disclosure.

🔧 How to fix

Update to the patched release per vendor advisory.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Audit SBOM/dependencies to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    Audit SBOM/dependencies for affected components.

    資産台帳・SBOM・依存マニフェストで Linux kernel を使っているサービスとバージョンを洗い出す。

  2. 2
    Post-deployment verification verify
    Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
