DEBIAN-CVE-2018-0733 (openssl)
Attack vector: remote (network-reachable) / unauthenticated / no user interaction
Affected: 1.1.0 - 1.1.0g
Patched: 1.1.0h-1 — apply immediately
Plan: 1) Audit SBOM/dependencies, 2) Stage→prod upgrade, 3) Add WAF/proxy monitoring on affected endpoints, 4) Hunt IOCs in logs.
Refs: see the GHSA / vendor advisory / patched release linked on this page.

What is the problem

A vulnerability (unclassified) exists in openssl.

Affected scope

Affected versions of openssl: 1.1.0 - 1.1.0g.

Severity

Severity: ?. Data can be tampered with by attackers.

How to fix

Update to 1.1.0h-1. (If a vulnerable version 1.1.0 - 1.1.0g is in production, plan an immediate maintenance window.)

Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'openssl' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposureidentify
    grep -r 'openssl' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で openssl を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Match against affected rangeverify
    Confirm if version satisfies `1.1.0 - 1.1.0g`

    Step 1 で見つかったバージョンが影響範囲 1.1.0 - 1.1.0g に該当するか照合。本番で稼働中ならインシデント扱い。

  3. 3
    Apply patchpatch
    Upgrade openssl to 1.1.0h-1

    ステージング環境で 1.1.0h-1 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。

  4. 4
    Post-deployment verificationverify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。

Original description The description as published by the source.

Because of an implementation bug the PA-RISC CRYPTO_memcmp function is effectively reduced to only comparing the least significant bit of each byte. This allows an attacker to forge messages that would be considered as authenticated in an amount of tries lower than that guaranteed by the security claims of the scheme. The module can only be compiled by the HP-UX assembler, so that only HP-UX PA-RISC targets are affected. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.0h (Affected 1.1.0-1.1.0g).
