Vulnerability in pyyaml (DEBIAN-CVE-2020-14343)
Summary
Vulnerability in pyyaml (DEBIAN-CVE-2020-14343). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Mitigation: upgrade to 5.3.1-4 or later.
Original description
The description as published by the source.
A vulnerability was discovered in the PyYAML library in versions before 5.4, where it is susceptible to arbitrary code execution when it processes untrusted YAML files through the full_load method or with the FullLoader loader. Applications that use the library to process untrusted input may be vulnerable to this flaw. This flaw allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system by abusing the python/object/new constructor. This flaw is due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2020-1747.

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of pyyaml.
Severity: ?. Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.
Update to 5.3.1-4.
Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.
Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'pyyaml' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.
Response actions
Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order
-
1Identify exposure identify
grep -r 'pyyaml' . | grep -v node_modulesリポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で
pyyamlを grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。 -
2Apply patch patch
Upgrade pyyaml to 5.3.1-4ステージング環境で 5.3.1-4 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。
-
3Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in productionパッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
