Vulnerability in fastnetmon (DEBIAN-CVE-2026-48686)

Summary

Vulnerability in fastnetmon (DEBIAN-CVE-2026-48686). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Mitigation: upgrade to 1.2.9-1 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

FastNetMon Community Edition through 1.2.9 contains a stack-based buffer overflow in the BGP NLRI (Network Layer Reachability Information) decoder. The function decode_bgp_subnet_encoding_ipv4_raw() in src/bgp_protocol.cpp reads prefix_bit_length directly from the BGP packet (line 99) without validating it is <= 32 for IPv4 prefixes. This value is passed to how_much_bytes_we_need_for_storing_certain_subnet_mask() which computes ceil(prefix_bit_length / 8), returning up to 32 bytes for a prefix_bit_length of 255. The result is used as the length argument to memcpy() (line 106), which copies into a 4-byte uint32_t stack variable (prefix_ipv4). This causes a stack buffer overflow of up to 28 bytes, which can be exploited for arbitrary code execution. Additionally, the unvalidated prefix_bit_length is passed to convert_cidr_to_binary_netmask_local_function_copy() (line 111), where a shift of (32 - cidr) with cidr > 32 causes undefined behavior.

❓ What is the problem

A vulnerability (unclassified) exists in fastnetmon.

📍 Affected scope

Check the vendor advisory for the affected versions of fastnetmon.

🔥 Severity

Severity: ?. Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover.

🔧 How to fix

Update to 1.2.9-1.

🛡️ Workaround

Until the patch is applied: disable the affected feature, apply WAF rules, or restrict access via network ACLs.

🔍 Detection

Search webserver/proxy logs for unusual request patterns matching this CVE's known IOCs. Run grep -r 'fastnetmon' . against your dependency files (package-lock.json, requirements.txt, go.sum) to find affected services.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'fastnetmon' . | grep -v node_modules

    リポジトリと本番環境の依存ファイル (package-lock.json / requirements.txt / go.sum / Gemfile.lock 等) で fastnetmon を grep し、稼働しているサービス・バージョンを把握する。

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade fastnetmon to 1.2.9-1

    ステージング環境で 1.2.9-1 に上げて回帰テスト → 本番反映。回帰テストはアプリの主要ハッピーパスを含めること。

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production

    パッチ適用後、ステージングで PoC または同等の悪用パターンを再現して脆弱性が閉じたことを確認。本番ではアクセスログ・WAF でアラート再発が無いか継続監視。
