Vulnerability in openjdk-9 (UBUNTU-CVE-2026-10037)

Summary

Vulnerability in openjdk-9 (UBUNTU-CVE-2026-10037). Successful exploitation can lead to full system takeover. Mitigation: upgrade to 3.70+nmu1ubuntu1.22.04.1 or later.

Original description

The description as published by the source.

A sandbox escape vulnerability exists in the OpenJDK packages provided in Ubuntu. The .jar MIME handlers installed by these packages execute files marked as executable when the mailcap package is installed. A compromised or malicious sandboxed application with access to the OpenURI portal via xdg-desktop-portal-gtk can write a malicious .jar file to the host file system, set its executable bit, and trigger the handler to execute arbitrary code outside of the sandbox environment.

Response actions

Concrete steps and command examples for SOC/SRE teams to execute in order

  1. 1
    Identify exposure identify
    grep -r 'openjdk-9' . | grep -v node_modules

  2. 2
    Apply patch patch
    Upgrade openjdk-9 to 3.70+nmu1ubuntu1.22.04.1

  3. 3
    Post-deployment verification verify
Confirm patched version is live in production
